NICOP-CAT2 (Stochastic experimental study of sea keeping performance for the high-speed delft catamaran)

The main objectives of this project are to gain more insight into the knowledge of the hydrodynamics of fast catamaran vessels and to construct a valuable data set for CFD benchmarking. Focuses are on the sea keeping behavior and operation in off design conditions (static large drift conditions) of a fast displacement catamaran. Operation in seaways is analyzed by experimental tests in both irregular waves, i.e. mimic the operational behavior in real scenario and regular waves. In this context, the project is focused on the experimental validation of Uncertainty Quantification problems for the irregular wave statistics, studied by modeling the irregular wave response with a distribution of regular waves. Following the NATO standardization agreement for operability assessment (STANAG), statistical quantities of interest involve resistance in wave, pitch and heave motion, vertical acceleration at the bridge and velocity at the flight deck. Moreover, the analysis of the hydrodynamics of the catamaran operating in off design conditions is of paramount importance regarding both maneuverability and safety of the vehicle; in these conditions, the flow field around the vessel is strongly characterized by large vertical structures. In this context, the project is aimed to the analysis of the dynamic of vortical structures shed from a naval vessel advancing in pure sway motion. This analysis is conducted by the measurements of the velocity fields around the catamaran by an optical system (Stereo Particle Image Velocimetry system).
